A picture book for Gremlins fans of most ages!
Another absolute gem from Insight Editions
Insight editions, the publishing company behind The Ghostbusters Artbook, and Tarot Del Toro, are at it again making a hilarious spin-off book. This time, their creation is based on the Gremlins movie.

What is Gizmo’s 12 Days of Christmas?
This book is a fully illustrated version of the 1st Gremlins movie, rewritten and set to the tune of the 12 Days of Christmas. It features all of your favorite Gremlins shenanigans in a bright and playful illustrated style. From Gizmo’s arrival, to the iconic movie theater scene, and through the town on a killing spree this book has it all.
The Illustrations
The bold line-less style and super expressive characters make this book a joy to read. And I was excited to learn that the illustrator, JJ Harrison, has quite to body of work that would fit happily on a shelf next to Gizmo’s 12 Day of Christmas such as: Ghostbusters: Race Against Slime, A Die Hard Christmas, and Back to the Future: Race Through Time.
Harrison’s clean, colorful style is perfect for Gizmo’s Christmas. It takes the mayhem and horror of the Gremlin’s universe and makes it just so dang cute!
Can you sing along with this book?
Yes, yes you can. And in case you were wondering; yes, yes I tried it.
I really enjoyed that the author, Andrea Robinson, stuck to the song’s rhythm throughout the book without literally doing the 12 Days of Christmas pattern. So, instead of ending up with 184 birds and gaggles of people by the end of the song, you get a playfully rhymed version of the full Gremlins story. (The math on the 12 Days of Christmas song is hilarious BTW: intmath.com.)
Is this book really for all ages?
Don’t be deceived by it’s adorable exterior, much like the mogwai there’s something a bit darker lurking underneath. You can expect to see knives stuck in gremlin bodies, lyrics about killing sprees, and a character saying that they just learned there is no Santa by something traumatic happening to her father. So… Maybe it’s not a book for all ages.
Though, there is no blood (just green goo) and all of the deaths and violence are portrayed in a playfully grim way. So, as long as the Santa thing isn’t an issue, anyone at a Goosebumps reading age and up will love this book. (What on earth does it say about me that I actually worry more about the Santa thing than the violence?)
Rating
As a horror Christmas picture book for young readers? Uh… probably not, but at least parental discretion is advised.
As a fun book for fans of Gremlins? 5 out of 5 stars. Anyone who has already seen and enjoyed the Gremlins movies will be instantly charmed by this book.
